In my Ultimate Routine, you start with a deck of cards that’s been genuinely shuffled by as many audience members as you fancy.
Then, you pick a random punter from the crowd (no sneaky pre-show nonsense) and, with a bit of theatrical flair, you guide them into what appears to be a Hypnotic Trance State (real hypnosis and pseudo hypnosis techniques included, because why not?). Suddenly, they seem to develop a "Psychic Ability" to tell whether the face-down playing cards from the freely shuffled deck (no deck switches, promise) are Red or Black.
The cards are then dealt into two piles as instructed by the "hypnotised" volunteer, who, bless them, is keeping their eyes firmly shut throughout.
And here’s the kicker: to everyone’s astonishment (including the bemused volunteer, who’s genuinely impressed), they manage to separate the cards almost perfectly, with just a card or two slightly out of place!
Sure, you could let them get it 100% spot on, but let’s be honest — a 99.9% success rate with one or two wrong makes for a far more entertaining show, doesn’t it?
At suitable events like "Psychic Parties", you can have the deck shuffled again by the crowd, and after placing your on-stage volunteer back in a blissfully eyes-closed state, you can don a genuine blindfold (yes, really) before the deck is handed to you face down, stashed under the table where you’re seated. This adds an extra layer of mystery, as you quite literally have no clue what order the cards are in, making it impossible for you to give the volunteer any cheeky hints.
Then, one by one, you pull cards from beneath the table and ask if they’re Red or Black. And, lo and behold, once again (with no deck switches, I swear), the volunteer successfully separates the colours like a pro.
