A couple of years back, Jonathan Royle, the cheeky chappy of stage hypnosis, decided to jump into the training game, hosting a variety of events each year. I recently attended his “Confessions of a Hypnotist” seminar in Birmingham. Before I could dive in, I had to plough through no fewer than fifteen DVDs he sends to participants ahead of time, including a previously recorded version of this seminar as a ten DVD set, a three-disc “Secrets of Professional Stage Hypnosis” featuring eighteen rapid induction techniques, and his two-disc “Secrets of Professional Hypnotherapy” course.
Good thing I was diligent with the DVDs, as Royle had the brilliant idea of giving everyone a different seminar instead of a repeat, meaning participants essentially got two seminars for the price of one. Quite the bargain, especially since before lunch on the Saturday, he managed to dismantle much of Derren Brown’s act (no small feat!). Just for kicks, he also tossed in a demonstration on giving cold readings.
Saturday afternoon shifted gears, focusing on marketing yourself as a hypnotist/'psychic'/mind magician, covering everything from radio and television interviews to the internet and psychic fairs. It included a screening of his now infamous Channel Four appearance on “The Darker Side of Stage Hypnosis.” That’s when things got really spicy, not just because of his past but due to his assertion that ‘there’s no such thing as hypnosis,’ which is central to both this seminar and the DVDs.
According to Royle, all hypnosis is, at its core, either a trick based on social compliance and “the karaoke effect” or, at best, self-hypnosis (if you’re into that sort of thing). Regardless of whether you agree or disagree, it’s clear how he formed this opinion. Having made his stage debut at the tender age of three and a half, courtesy of his veteran entertainer father, Les, he grew up surrounded by circus performers and magicians, and has been performing magic since childhood. To him, everything—including stage hypnosis—is a con (his words, not mine!). Some delegates took it at face value, while others tried to decipher the subtext.
Wrapping up the first day with a laugh, he revealed a flipchart displaying the eighteen (yes, eighteen!) certificates participants take home from the training, with a giant caption reading “this is bull****,” and used them as a metaphor for carving out your own niche market.
Sunday morning brought further controversy, thanks to ‘CMT,’ his unique therapy style that cleverly incorporates close-up magic (pun intended). Picture this: he’s smoking while demonstrating how to help people quit smoking and discussing ‘cognitive dissonance’. Some therapists in the room—comprising a mix of wannabes and seasoned stage hypnotists, magicians, hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, NLP practitioners, and even a psychiatrist—were less than amused, labelling him irresponsible and unethical. By the end of the day, however, most were won over, recognising that, regardless of his stance, he had imparted some powerful lessons.
Rounding it off in a Robert Anton Wilson-esque fashion (though I doubt he’ll appreciate the comparison), he told his audience, “everything I’ve said this weekend is bull****…if you want it to be… and everything I’ve said this weekend is the truth…if you want it to be,” before diving back into stage hypnosis, which he demonstrated extensively with audience volunteers. The day concluded with a Q&A session covering professional insurance and Equity membership.
Unsurprisingly, Royle is an engaging and entertaining presenter. He’s not for the faint-hearted or those who can’t handle having their beliefs shaken, but his extensive knowledge of magic, mentalism, and hypnosis, combined with the DVDs—which cover various aspects like circumventing the 1952 Stage Hypnotism Act, 'hypnotricks', suggestibility tests, and the psychology of stage hypnosis (plus a CD Rom with e-books, seminar notes, and more)—make this training a formidable package that will pique the interest of many stage hypnotists, magicians, mentalists, and therapists.
