Years back, I thought, "Why not whip up my own minimalist twist on a book test?" So, I sat down and laid out some criteria with the aim of crafting a dictionary-style book test that didn’t rely on dictionaries or any of that typical magic shop nonsense.
I needed something I could use in cabaret and for those cheeky walkaround close-up gigs, so it had to fit snugly in my pocket. The prop had to look innocent enough for spectators to handle without me having to play crowd control, and I wanted the whole selection process to feel completely random. Most importantly, I aimed for all the words to be interesting or downright peculiar.
After a good bit of tinkering, I ended up adapting a brilliant routine and blending it with what’s essentially a word test, which I’ve cheekily dubbed D.D.T. or the Dictionary Diary Test.
Hand a spectator a nondescript pocket diary, and ask them to think of any date in the year (you’ll have no clue what it is). They’ll then quietly read the quirky word written next to that date. And just like that, you can reveal exactly what’s on their mind!
Just one ordinary pocket diary packed with hundreds of words.
