"A really powerful spell-to-your-card effect. The title says it all, it is Bannon's "Dead Reckoning" except on steroids."
- Tommaso Guglielmi

"For a long time I've been performing "Dead Reckoning" by John Bannon. It's one of my go-to effects in my repertoire. But that changed today. "Dead Reckoning: On Steroids" is a marvelous improvement on the original. It is unbelievably deceptive and impossible to reverse engineer, and it replaces "Dead Reckoning" in my repertoire. Thanks Unnamed Magician for this splendid creation."
- Brian Draven

"The main effect is good but the first bonus effect is beyond good." - Deven Chodas "Wow, just wow! He's done it again. I just cannot believe how many quality effects the Unnamed Magician has put out and he keeps coming back with more and more. This trick is another amazing publication. It takes a classic trick that we all know about and genuinely makes it better. Allowing the spectator to shuffle their pile after making a selection is a massive step forward."
- Tony Bianco

"Just incredible! At last someone has discovered the grail of this card plot..."
- Ryan Quinton

"This is easily the best spelling trick I have ever seen. No question about it. I'm not one for spelling tricks in general but I will definitely try this one on my audiences. The two bonus tricks are also super strong!"
- Peter Lee

Ever wanted to pull off John Bannon's "Dead Reckoning" while letting your spectator actually shuffle their selected card's pile? Well, folks, your dreams have just collided with reality. Dead Reckoning: On Steroids is here to save the day (and your performance). Read on, my friends. (And yes, there's a full performance video right up there as well.)

Picture this: you introduce a deck of cards and hand it over to your spectator. Then, you turn your back.

With your back turned, you instruct the spectator to give the deck as many cuts as they fancy, effectively eliminating any pesky key cards. Next, they cut off about a third of the deck, peek at the bottom card (which they think is random, but we know better), and that’s their selection. Then, they get to shuffle their portion to their heart's content, truly losing their card in the mix. Oh, and they can even rummage through it to double-check their card is lost in there—because trust is key, right?

Once they're satisfied, they put the rest of the deck on top of their portion. You then turn back around and confidently declare, "I have no clue what your card is or where it is in this deck. But I do know it’s somewhere in the bottom third—though I have no idea where since you shuffled. Let’s mix everything up even more!" You then give the deck a casual shuffle (without peeking, of course) and hand it back to them.

You say, "You shuffled your portion to lose your card, and I just shuffled the whole deck. Your card could be anywhere now. Let’s see if a miracle happened! Spell out 'My card is the [insert card name]', dealing one card for each letter." You get them to spell 'My card is the' out loud while they deal one card face-up for every letter. Then, they mentally count the letters in their selected card's name. You call out "stop" at just the right moment—coincidentally where they finish their mental count. They then name their card for the first time and flip over the next card in the deck... and surprise, surprise—it’s their chosen card. An unbelievable coincidence—because they just spelled to their own card!

Some important conditions of note:

  • The magician's back is turned the whole time during the selection and return. You only turn back once the deck is reassembled.
  • After choosing a card, the spectator thoroughly shuffles their part to lose their card, and they can even check to make sure it’s genuinely lost.
  • When it comes to spelling the deal, they’re dealing the cards face-up.
  • No peeking and no forcing here—the magician has zero idea what the spectator's card is.
  • Almost self-working—so ridiculously easy to perform.

Note: Using the same core method as the main effect, there are also two bonus routines packed in. These are completely different from the spelling effect—think two spectators, two decks, and a jaw-dropping coincidence. So, there’s plenty more to learn beyond just the original spelling trick.

The main effect is taught in both video and PDF formats, while the bonus routines are exclusively in the PDF. Get ready for some serious entertaining!
