GIY2: Gimmick It Yourself 2 is back and better than ever, folks! If you enjoyed the first installment, get ready for more DIY magic goodness that’ll have you crafting your own gimmicks in no time.
This time around, I’m sharing four fresh gimmicks that I’ve tested in the wild—perfect for everything from casual hangouts to those high-stakes gigs, and even your online performances where you want to impress without the risk of lag.
In Gimmick It Yourself 2, I’ll walk you through each gimmick with a quick overview, then dive into the nitty-gritty of crafting them, and finally, I’ll share a heap of ideas and complete routines to really make these gimmicks shine.
The inspiration for this project came from the good ol’ days when multi-trick releases were all the rage. My aim? To pack in more routines and ideas than you’d get from your average single release. Let’s get into the fun stuff!
Here’s what’s in store:
EVO
This gem is your new best friend—versatile and practical, it’s the Swiss Army knife of gimmicks. Perfect for crafting jaw-dropping visuals for social media, it also shines in real-world contexts.
With the EVO gimmick, you can vanish a coin in mid-air or pull off a sneaky card-to-pocket with ease. The best part? The item you’re using doesn’t need to be magnetic—though if you want to play with magnets, feel free!
The tutorial is loaded with ideas, including how to switch items visually, vanish and restore objects, and push practically anything through a glass table. If you’ve got a PK ring, you can probably do those effects with EVO too. And did I mention it’s nearly silent? No more embarrassing "CLUNK" moments when you vanish something!
UTILIGHT
Utilight is your ticket to making a super clean coin vanish without breaking a sweat. Think of it as the Scotch and Soda gimmick’s cooler cousin—no need for two coins here!
This bad boy allows for effortless, no-sleight-of-hand vanishes and clean switches. You can swap regular coins for other objects right in front of your spectators, making this perfect for everything from coin bends to switching in gimmicked coins like a coin bite.
Plus, I’ll teach you a straightforward routine where you seal a coin inside a sugar packet—ideal for both casual and professional settings. Sweet, right?
PHONEY
Phoney brings a modern twist to the classic bottle-through-table routine. With smartphones everywhere, you can perform this unforgettable illusion without waiting for the perfect dinner setting. Talk about accessibility!
You’ll learn not only the classic ‘through table’ routine, but also how to vanish a phone and make it reappear inside a sealed Pringles can (just make sure your phone fits!). Oh, and I’ve thrown in Foney Phoney: a quick, cheap alternative to the main gimmick you can whip up right away to play around with the concept.
REAL WORKER
Real Worker is super simple and relies on a pull-based gimmick. It’s your go-to for cleanly vanishing and retrieving bills without any plastic frills. Easy to make and packed with potential, it’s great for a variety of routines, including signed bills in wallets, oranges, and even Sharpies—hello, Sharp Money!
The tutorial runs over 2 hours and is stuffed with my top ideas and routines using these gimmicks. And just like the first GIY project, these tricks can easily complement the routines you’re already rocking.
