Gimmick It Yourself 2 is, unsurprisingly, the sequel to the original Gimmick It Yourself project!
After the smashing success and rave reviews of the first edition, I thought, why not keep the magic rolling? In this series, I’m all about sharing how to whip up DIY gimmicks that I’ve actually used to craft a range of routines and magical moments—whether you’re performing casually, in a working setting, or even online.
Gimmick It Yourself 2 spills the beans on how to create 4 nifty gimmicks that have jazzed up my performances over the past few years, resulting in some proper fun and visually stunning magic for my social media. The tutorial kicks off with a quick overview of each gimmick, then dives into how to make them, and wraps up with a treasure trove of ideas and full routines you can perform with them.
This whole project was inspired by the multi trick releases that used to be all the rage when I first dipped my toes into magic. My aim? To give you a boatload of value, with more routines, ideas, and inspiration than you'd get from a single release.
Here’s a cheeky rundown of the gimmicks.
EVO
Meet EVO—the Swiss Army knife of gimmicks! It's practical, versatile, and just the ticket for conjuring up fun, ultra-visual magic moments for social media (and yes, it does have real-world applications too).
With the EVO gimmick, you can pull off a dazzling range of effects, from making a coin vanish in mid-air to executing a crafty card-to-pocket. And here’s the kicker: the item you’re changing or vanishing doesn’t have to be magnetic; it can be, but it’s not a deal-breaker if it isn’t.
The tutorial shares tips on visually and deceptively switching items, vanishing objects, restoring them, pushing practically anything through a glass table, and even performing PK effects. Basically, if you can do it with a PK ring, you can do it with EVO!
And let’s not forget, it’s practically silent—so no more awkward “CLUNK” when you make something disappear!
UTILIGHT
Utilight is your go-to for performing an ultra-clean coin vanish without needing to master sleight of hand. Imagine the cleanliness of a Scotch and Soda gimmick but without the hassle of juggling two coins!
Alongside the super easy, no-sleight-of-hand vanishes, the tutorial shows you how to use Utilight for seamless switches. You can swap regular coins for other items right under your spectators’ noses—easy peasy! This technique is perfect for a coin bend routine or slyly switching in gimmicked coins like a coin bite.
Also included is a straightforward, no-fuss coin-in-sugar-packet routine that’s ideal for both casual and working gigs. You’ll learn a quick method to seal a coin inside a sugar packet for this effect.
PHONEY
Phoney is a cheeky little gimmick that I came up with ages ago. It offers a fresh, modern twist on the classic bottle-through-table routine. Since phones are everywhere, Phoney lets you perform this mind-boggling illusion with something you can easily get your hands on—no more waiting for a fancy dinner to pull off this memorable close-up trick!
Along with the classic 'through table' routine, I’ll show you how to vanish the phone only to have it reappear inside a sealed Pringles can (just make sure your phone fits—no one wants a can that’s too cramped!). Plus, I’m throwing in Foney Phoney, a super quick, dirt-cheap alternative to the primary gimmick. You can whip this up in no time and start playing around with the concept straight away.
REAL WORKER
The Real Worker is a simple pull-based gimmick that’s a dream in any situation. It lets you vanish and retrieve any banknote without the need for any plastic appendages! It’s easy to make and has multiple applications. Included are routines like the signed bill in the spectator's wallet, signed bill in an orange, and the signed bill in Sharpie—Sharp Money.
The tuition video clocks in at over 2 hours and is packed with my favourite ideas and routines using these gimmicks. And just like the first Gimmick It Yourself, all these gimmicks and ideas are bound to complement or elevate routines you’re already doing.
