The Bizarre Magic Show on this volume isn’t for the faint-hearted (or the easily offended). It dives into dark, somewhat disturbing territory, and yes, there’s blood. But if you find yourself in the right venue with the right audience, these acts will be etched in their memories long after the applause fades. Catering primarily to adults and older teens, this collection offers a rich tapestry of plots and methods that will pique the interest of magicians across the board.
After a suitably sombre intro, Dan kicks things off with "Book of Blood," an ingenious twist on an ancient principle that sets a chilling tone for the evening ahead. Next up is Harlan’s "Needle Thru Arm" — a classic that you’ll learn to create yourself, though brace yourself, it’s not for the squeamish! This trio wraps up with "Psychotic Surgery," an astounding take on the Torn and Restored Card that leaves your spectator clutching a rather unforgettable souvenir.
The middle set takes a darker turn as Harlan opens with "Deviled Egg," a demonstration where he claims to rid a spectator of werewolf’s blood, complete with gooey evidence for dramatic flair. Then, Dan spins a yarn about a card game between God and the devil, with a hapless audience member’s soul as the ultimate prize. Harlan closes this segment with "Sharp Taste," where he appears to swallow and then thread five razor blades — a classic that’s sure to raise eyebrows.
As the final act unfolds, Dan tells a tale of birth, death, and rebirth with "Baby Balloon," where a popped balloon is not only restored but re-inflated (magic, eh?). "Psychic Surgery" follows, showcasing the grisly techniques of so-called psychic surgeons who remove malignancies without so much as a scalpel in sight. Harlan’s hands are visibly entering the abdomen of a volunteer, pulling out various bits and bobs — a gory reminder that we can be easily fooled.
Wrapping things up, Dan recites Mary Howitt’s classic poem "The Spider and the Fly," illustrating the age-old lesson about the perils of flattery with a solid ring and a length of rope. This theatrical piece lingers with the crowd, leaving them with the feeling that what they’ve witnessed is far deeper than mere magic tricks.
Enjoy the show, and then get ready to learn the secrets of a master as every nuance is revealed. Before you know it, you’ll be packing small and playing big!
