Larry Jennings - A Private Lesson

Larry Jennings was quite possibly the best sleight-of-hand artist to ever grace this planet. Over his 64 years, he conjured up a plethora of classic routines in both card and coin magic. Now, sure, lots of Larry's brilliance has made its way into books, tapes, and DVDs. But let's be honest—those books often miss the finer points, and Larry could get a bit jittery in front of the camera (who wouldn’t?).

Back in the early '70s, our man Larry made a move from Los Angeles—where he was busy soaking up knowledge from Dai Vernon—to Lake Tahoe, California, to kick off a plumbing business (yep, you read that right). It was there that he met Louis Falanga, who became both his student and a good mate. One day, in Louis' living room, Larry generously let himself be filmed as he shared 12 of his all-time favourite routines:

  • Jennings' Chop Cup
  • Don Alan's Lump of Coal (LJ Version)
  • Peripatetic Coins
  • The Chinese Connection (explanation only)
  • Cigarette Manipulations
  • Larry's Linking Ring Routine
  • Coins Through the Table (with Pop-Up Move)
  • L.J. Four Coins Across
  • Coin Through Spectator's Fist
  • Open Travellers
  • Nowhere and Everywhere Again
  • The Visitor

This was the ideal setup for Larry—he was laid-back and at his peak, just shooting a casual video for a pal. The quality? Let's just say it’s a charming throwback to a 30-year-old home video from someone’s front room, complete with the delightful sound of bacon sizzling in the background (who doesn’t love bacon?). Given the top-notch material, we can overlook the technical quirks (though the original Beta tape has undergone some fancy digital polishing).

At the time, many of the routines were unpublished, and now, a quarter-century later, it’s hard to believe Larry's been gone for a decade. Sure, most of the tricks made it into print eventually, but a few details and nifty bits got left behind. Other gems, like the Linking Rings, Lump of Coal, and Coins Through Table using the Pop-Up Move, never saw the light of day in print. All these routines are pure gold in close-up magic, and some, like the Chop Cup routine, feature the best explanations Larry ever gave.

Having enjoyed a copy of this tape countless times over the years, I can assure you it’s a treat—thanks to Louis Falanga for making this available. So grab the download, kick back, and take a trip back to when Jimmy Carter was in the White House, folks were visiting the moon regularly, and Larry Jennings was wowing audiences everywhere.
