This is the sixth edition of a book test that's practically a staple for many pros in both close-up and stand-up gigs. It's quick, direct, and so easy to present, you could do it whilst juggling (not that we recommend that).
So, here’s the setup: you saunter on stage, casually mentioning you'd like to try your hand at a bit of mind reading. Out comes a bag from the local bookshop (yes, a real bookshop), you rip it open, and voilà — two hardcover books emerge. You pick a spectator, have her verify she’s never laid eyes on you before, and let her choose one of the two books (free choice, no pressure!). She has a gander through the book and tells you how many pages it boasts.
Next, a second spectator gets to name any page number (yep, another free choice). The first spectator turns to the chosen page and concentrates on the first word she sees. Now, here comes the fun part: you read her mind and jot down the word she’s thinking of.
She yells out her word, and surprise, surprise — it matches what you wrote. It’s a miracle (or is it?).
But wait, you’re not done just yet! As a cheeky afterthought, have the spectator think of the last word on that page. Now you can dramatically spell it out for a double whammy of astonishment!
