Picture this: you hand four pristine, blank business cards (billets, for those in the know) to a spectator. They inspect these beauties like a hawk, searching for any sneaky markings. If they’re not completely sold on them, you graciously offer to let them swap one out. How nice of you!
Once they’re happy, they select one card for themselves and return the rest. While they’re at it, you casually toss them a pen and ask them to jot down the name of a famous figure who’s kicked the bucket. Meanwhile, you meander into the audience with the remaining three cards, distributing them to three eager volunteers. Their task? Scribble down their first names—easy peasy.
After everyone's written their names, they fold their cards like origami experts, concealing their secrets. Now, all four cards are tossed into a container (a box with a lid works wonders), which you then hand to the spectator who wrote the deceased name. They give it a good mix, ensuring that no one has a clue where anything is.
Once the cards have been thoroughly shuffled, they’re placed on the table, and our trusty spectator is asked to pick three. As they reveal these cards, the tension builds—wouldn’t you know it, they've correctly picked the three living names! That leaves one lone folded card, which they toss back into the box while handing the named cards back to their respective owners.
Now it’s time for a moment of concentration. The spectator locks their gaze on the closed box sitting on the table, and everyone knows you’ve been nowhere near that last card. After a dramatic pause, you confidently name the deceased individual that the spectator had in mind. They pull out the card from the box, and voilà! It’s their keepsake to remember this delightful moment.
