This was probably Obie O'Brien's pièce de résistance. He whipped it out at every magic convention and all his paid parlor and close-up gigs. It’s a quick, in-the-hands packet trick using oversized cards and a twist that’ll leave them smiling (or scratching their heads).
The fun kicks off as an observation test with four Queens of Clubs. You flip one of the Queens and ask how many are face down. When they confidently answer one, you make a magic gesture (the classic "ta-da" move) and reveal that all of them are face down instead. After flipping one face up, you prompt them again—this time, they’re all face up. Surprise, surprise!
But wait, there’s more! You ask the audience if they remember what colour the backs are. They’ll shout “blue,” and you, with a cheeky grin, reveal a completely different blue back with funky spirals! Then, you proceed to show off the others with red spiral backs, green spiral backs, and, you guessed it, yellow spiral backs.
Resetting the cards for the next performance is a doddle. The only sleight involved is the Elmsley Count (which sounds fancy, but you’ll nail it).
