I’ve always been captivated by impossible objects; there’s something magical about creating oddities that you can hand out. If you know my work, you’ll recognise effects like Labelled, Linko, and OCL — all designed to leave spectators with something they can hold onto forever.
I'm not a fan of gimmicks that leave you wondering, 'will this work today?' or 'please don’t break on me.' The magic landscape has changed, that much is clear. A lot of magic is now viewed online, and there's a market for a plethora of effects with terrible angles that don’t need to be reliable, since you can just re-film your performance.
But that’s not my jam. I perform for real people in real life, and you can’t just 're-shoot' those moments. Let’s also chat about OCL quickly...
Some of you might be thinking, 'isn’t OCL your 'perfect' linking card effect?'
If you haven’t heard of it, no worries. OCL is a linking card method I’m incredibly proud of. It stemmed from a challenge: how do you take one card, tear two rings from it, have them signed, and then link them together so they can be kept as a souvenir? It nailed that challenge but, as a working magician, it had its quirks. It could be fiddly to create if you weren’t used to it, required specific glues, had a strict time frame between setup and performance, and couldn’t be performed surrounded. If you didn’t nail the performance, the rings could end up looking less than perfect.
Rings wipes out ALL of those issues.
