Picture this: a performer struts onto the stage with an empty hat and a solid die (because what’s magic without some classic props, right?). He casually drops the die into the upside-down hat, as you do. Then comes the pièce de résistance: a double compartment box with windows and sliding shutters, which, let’s be honest, looks a bit like a magician's version of a dodgy pub table (but we don't judge). The die is plucked from the hat and popped into one of the boxes—doors closed, suspense building. The audience is asked to remember where the die is (easy peasy, or so they think).

Next, the boxes are tilted, and the doors swing open. Ta-da! The die has vanished! (Cue the unimpressed audience. They’ve probably heard it slide over to the other box, haven’t they?) “Open the other box!” they demand, probably feeling quite clever. The magician, playing it cool, closes the first box, tilts it (yep, you can hear that cheeky die sliding again), and opens the second box to reveal—surprise, surprise—an empty space.

This whole charade of sliding the die back and forth continues, and you can almost hear the audience howling for all the doors to be opened. (They really think they’ve got it all figured out, bless them.) But then, the magician does something proper sneaky: he takes one of the closed boxes, plonks it down a bit away, opens the front door to show the die is in there, makes a dramatic throwing motion, and—shock horror—it’s vanished! But wait, he flips open the other box, and there’s the die, looking as smug as ever.

He pulls this trick a few more times (because why not?), building the anticipation to a fever pitch. Finally, he opens all the doors of both boxes, proving the die has genuinely vanished into thin air. And just when you think it’s all over, he reveals the solid die is back in the hat, like it never left! Classic.
