SPOTS by Michael Ross - Produced by Bill Abbott Magic*
"When I was 14 years old I saw Michael Ross perform at the anniversary party of a local magic shop here in Toronto. One of the pieces he performed was his original presentation and handling for the spot card that baffled me completely. Even though I had a version of the same prop at home, Michael seemed to make the spots appear like magic and more incredibly with audience members on all sides of him! I am so proud to offer Michael's unparalleled routine. I have added this routine to my show and now you can too."
- Bill Abbott
The Effect
So, you think you’ve seen it all? Here’s the kicker: the magician claims he’ll put the audience under a mild hypnotic spell and trot out a card with four (or is it three?) sides. Cue the large domino-like card. One spot on one side, four on another, three on yet another, and six on the last! Hold on tight as this is repeated, only to reveal the true magic: the psychological and manual manipulation that tricks the audience into believing the card has four sides. As if that wasn’t enough, spots start popping up like they have a mind of their own as the card flips, culminating in a dazzling finale where the card explodes with white dots. Mind blown, right?
An Introduction
The spot card is a staple in the arsenal of many pros, including the great David Copperfield. Michael Ross has crafted an elegant blend of technique and performance that’s anything but standard. This routine is designed to be performed up close and surrounded—because why not baffle everyone in a ten-foot radius? Whether you’re on the street, at a house party, or in front of 2,500 theater-goers, SPOTS is the perfect pocket-sized wonder.

Routines, Audiences & Venues
Michael has worked this routine into every kind of setting you can think of. From kids to corporate gigs to comedy clubs, and even silently with music! He explains how SPOTS serves as a fantastic lead-in to other effects like the Invisible Deck or Torn & Restored Newspaper. It’s all about the setup, delivery, and timing—prepare for some guaranteed laughs and insights into audience engagement. -
An Audience Proven Routine
This isn’t just a trick Michael has tossed around a few times; it’s a cornerstone of his repertoire, performed thousands of times over three decades. He’ll explain how SPOTS has stood the test of time and audience scrutiny. -
Why he prefers The Dynamo Card?
Michael switched from Tenyo's What's Next spot card to the Nielsen Dynamo for its superior visibility under stage lights and its sneaky deceptive qualities, whether you’re in a packed theater or up close in a living room. He has used it everywhere from 5,000-seat venues to cozy house parties, and it never disappoints.
You can use any similar cards like Crazy Dots, Dizzy Diamonds, etc.
Mike Close said, "This is a real solution for this trick."
In fact, this is the only real method for this trick ever released!
The SPOTS Method & Handling
Michael dives into why the traditional handling just wasn’t cutting it for the impact he wanted. He’ll guide you on how to position the card so it doesn’t block your charming face and ensure everyone can see the magic from any angle—even from behind! He covers surrounded handling so smoothly that the secret moves become invisible. Even if you never plan to perform surrounded, mastering this technique will boost your overall performance skills. He’ll also clarify the card's positioning for maximum audience impact, and how to finesse spot movements on the fly.
