Effect: A spectator signs a card and pops it back into the deck. The performer then grabs a brown string shopping bag (because who doesn’t love a good bag?) and has the spectator drop the cards inside. He then shares that he’s seen other magicians toss cards in the air and catch one on a sword. But alas, our magician doesn’t possess a shiny sword, so instead, he brings out a hefty wooden stake, which is dramatically banged on the floor. One end of this beauty is sharpened to a point. The cards in the bag are given a good shake. The spectator names their card, and with a flourish, the performer drives the stake down into the bag with such gusto that it pierces right through the bottom.
Out comes the stake, and impaled upon it is a card. Given the stake’s impressive size, only a narrow border of the card remains. The performer theatrically peels the remnants off the stake, brandishing the empty frame towards the audience as he announces the chosen card! Just when the audience thinks it’s all over, here comes the kicker: the performer taps the side of the stake, and from the blunt end, he shakes out the chosen and signed card—borderless and ready for applause! He shows it to the spectator, who confirms it’s their signed card, and the crowd goes wild.
