For every magician worth their salt, keeping it economical is the name of the game.
So, how about just rocking a single random odd-backed card alongside your trusty deck? Sounds bonkers, right? Well, that’s the magic behind the Chicago Opener (originally Hot Card Trick No.1 by Al Leech, 1950, later popularised by Frank Everhart) also known as Red Hot Mama. It’s an absolute gem of a trick. You’ll be smitten with both the handling and the premise. Others have tried to adapt it to fit their own style, but let’s face it, nothing beats the original.
Then the brainiacs decided – why not amp things up with some odd-backed cards? These routines give you maximum mileage from just one extra card. Now that’s what we call prop economy! (Just a tip: if you’re out and about, stash a few odd-backers; they’ll save you from being limited to just that one card).
The Effects:
Chicago Unboxed - Andino’s twist on the Chicago Opener. Kicking off with the classic setup, it ends on an impossible location that packs a much bigger punch than the original. It’s a real crowd-pleaser and moneymaker. (Alternate presentations include the card to shoe and card to wallet).
Chicagological - PK’s take on the Chicago Opener. Now, this doesn’t resemble the Chicago Opener in the slightest. Using a completely different approach, you’ll see PK’s unique perspective on magic. It’s a delightful mix of deception, self-doubt, and transpositions, making for a truly one-of-a-kind experience. (Two handlings: one signed, one not).
Seven Eleven, Mate - An original collaboration between Andino and PK, featuring multiple phases of matching numbers and cards, culminating in a killer finish. You’ll absolutely love this one, mate.
Returning Customer - Fancy an Ambitious Card Routine that incorporates an odd-backed card? Sounds tempting, right? This routine’s got some tricky moves, making it the most challenging in the bunch, but trust us, the payoff is incredible. (And quite daring, if we’re honest). A brilliant closer for your ACR. (There’s a bonus video to help you nail one of the moves).
Conspicuous - A signed card makes a sneaky journey from a packet to the deck. One card’s missing from the packet, and voilà, it’s now in the deck. This routine is a clever blend of classic tricks, cherry-picking the best bits. It’s simple to perform, and you’ll adore it. (There’s also a regular deck version that’s still pretty nifty).
BONUS Trick - C2Ph - The odd-backed card acts as a “utility” “move.” Sounds a bit peculiar, but it’ll all click once you see it, and you’ll love performing this straightforward trick. It involves a smartphone and another extra card, but you’ll dig it. There’s also an alternate handling that doesn’t need an extra card, making it a fantastic impossible location trick (think Andino’s Chicago Unboxed).
The Lectures:
Eight 1080p HD videos (including the bonus trick, preview, and extra move practice) come together for just over 2 HOURS of detailed explanation, covering routines, subtleties, and moves. All lectures feature unedited performances, so you can see each routine in its entirety. Plus, there’s a PDF with timestamps for each video and a sprinkling of extra credits and ideas.
TLDR:
* Just one odd-backed card is all you need for any/every performance.
* No other gimmicks required.
* Six full routines, explained in detail.
* All routines have been thoroughly performed, developed, tested, and refined on the street under busking conditions for years.
