More than 45 years ago, a now-defunct British company known as Supreme Magic released a gem of an idea from Ali Bongo called "Natty Knitting". It featured a cleverly gimmicked ball of yarn that could transform into a miniature sweater faster than you can say “knit one, purl two”. When I had a natter with Steve Hart, he shared some routines he was doing with this prop that were not only entertaining but also a bit of a surprise (and who doesn't love surprises?).
Here’s the kicker: finding the special ball of yarn was like looking for a needle in a haystack, and attempts to recreate it Stateside were met with prices that could make a grown man weep. So, I took matters into my own hands and had them made overseas in four smashing colours: red, yellow, blue, and green.
With this little beauty, the only limit is your imagination (no pressure!).
Steve Hart's routine goes as follows:
The performer casually drops a ball of yarn into a paper bag. Then, he shows off a few cards with items of clothing scribbled on them—think sock, mitten, bib, sweater, slipper, and the like. A spectator picks one (no pressure, mate). Knitting needles are tossed into the bag, and after a few shakes, out pops a sweater that matches the chosen card! And guess what? The bag’s now empty except for the knitting needles, which can be inspected—no funny business here.
Additional routines are included, because why not?
The wool/sweater and written instructions are all part of the deal (knitting needles and cards not included, mind you).
