Picture this: you whip out two charming little wooden boards and let a spectator have a good old poke around. Meanwhile, another lucky soul picks a card from a deck. No funny business here; the assistant gets to shuffle the deck (yes, it’s in the rules).
Next up, you plonk a delightful small candleholder with a candle smack bang in the centre of the table and ask someone to light it up with a match (safety first, kids).
Now for the fun part! You stack one slate on top of the other, tie them together with a snazzy ribbon, and pop a piece of chalk on top. The slates sit next to the flickering candle like they’re on a date.
As the spectator whispers their card near the candle flame, it’s like some kind of magical ritual (a bit like making a wish, but more impressive). Then, with a flourish, you untie the ribbon and reveal that the name of the card is now written in chalk on one of the slates. And guess what? The slates are fully examinable by the spectator!!
