The Oil and Water effect has been around longer than your nan's favourite tea blend, tracing its roots back to the 1940s with a cheeky trick by Walter Gibson in The Jinx. Ed Marlo was the clever chap who slapped the name "Oil and Water" on it (and likely invented more methods than you can shake a wand at). The premise? As simple as it is maddening: black and red playing cards, usually in little packets, stubbornly refuse to mix, no matter how hard the magician tries to meddle.
On this DVD, Bill Malone serves up a delightful smorgasbord of methods that make this deceptively simple trick look downright magical. He kicks things off with two routines; the first, an Ed Marlo gem, is technically tricky but visually stunning, while the second, courtesy of Dave Solomon, employs some nifty subtleties to pull off the effect. David Regal doesn’t just separate cards by colour but does so by face too, because why not show off a bit? Larry Jennings offers a straightforward yet theatrically pleasing version. Michael Ammar wows with Roy Walton's classic where the cards don’t just separate — they morph into entirely different cards (now that’s fancy!). Dan Fleshman takes a minimalist approach with just the Aces, and Josh Jay ties it all together with a hybrid routine that will leave your audience's jaws on the floor. Darwin Ortiz rounds things off with a brilliantly titled effect where not only do the cards in two little packets separate, but so do the rest of the deck that some poor spectator just shuffled.
Now, some might scoff at the Oil and Water effect, claiming it’s only for magicians, but just wait till you see the reactions these performers rake in from their audiences. The hardest part? Deciding which routine to shoehorn into your act first! (Good luck with that!)
