Steve Mayhew is like a cheeky koala who’s not only got a knack for card tricks but also a suitcase full of comedy gold. Picture Erdnase with a clown nose—much more charming and definitely less fictional. He’s the kind of guy who can chat a lady out of her last twenty quid, toss it into the crowd, and have her laughing and giving him a hug. Watch him lift someone’s cash right under their nose, and the crowd goes wild as he tries to console the poor bloke. That’s just a taste of the hilarity and skill packed into this routine, plus he introduces a brand-new way to “accidentally” vanish a volunteer's dosh, bringing the total known methods of doing that to a whopping three.
You’ll get to experience the full show on this DVD, featuring genuine laughs and real astonishment from an actual audience. No over-the-top reactions (you know the type) and no breaks for explanations, so your mates can enjoy the spectacle from start to finish. Later, you can dive into the explanations and see how a master combines magic with mayhem, all while managing to charm the socks off everyone in the room.
But it’s not all giggles. Freedom, or as the cool kids call it, the Mayhew Poker Deal, showcases the ultimate in false dealing. You’ll appear to deal not just from the middle but from random spots throughout the deck—3rd, 6th, 35th, or even the 49th card—when all you’re really dealing is a sneaky second. The beauty of it? It’s so clear and simple that even the most card-unaware audience will instantly grasp the trickery at play.
And for those who earn their living from this craft, there’s Full Frontal Conus. Here, Steve boldly claims he’ll swipe the aces right from under the spectator’s hand and then goes ahead and does it. He teases the audience by assuring them he’ll do it again. Just as they think they’ve got him figured out, he’ll shift the deck or play around with the bottom cards, yet every time they check, those aces are still sitting right where they should be. Finally, in a stroke of genius, he hands the cards to the spectator. She deals the aces herself, covers them with her hand, and somehow, he still manages to nick the aces again.
This is the Conus Aces—a routine that’s earned a reputation for being both revered and feared among magicians. While many can execute the moves, only a select few can manipulate the audience through a series of delightful sucker tricks that lead to an astonishing hands-off miracle. Steve makes it all look easy, charming the crowd and sharing key insights on building trust even after they’ve been repeatedly hoodwinked.
As if that wasn’t enough, Steve spills the beans on four more commercial routines from his working set that are as entertaining to perform as their titles suggest: Three by Three (which is also known as a Balloon, a Cartwheel, and a Pony Ride); The James Brown Aces, Delores in the Meadow, and The Sanborn Switch. Okay, maybe not so much with that last one, but to sweeten the deal, we’ve also included a bonus interview with Steve, some outtakes, and we might just have the first-ever use of the word “crunk” in a magic video.
Running Time Approximately: 1 Hr 21 mins.
